Oil Production and Refining

The exploration, production and refining of crude oil is often refered to as 'upstream' activities. Reciprocating compressors are used to lift gas from the well and deliver it to the refinery. Depending upon the nature of the formation, gases can contain liquids or corrosive elements that compromise the reliability of the compressor and its components. Separators knock out liquids and oil refineries prepare the products for other midstream processes.   For several decades, HOERBIGER Compression Technology has provided solutions in the form of producs and services that solve the problems common to upstream activities.

Upstream and Downstream

Activities in the petroleum industry are divided into three segments: upstream, midstream and downstream. Upstream activities involve the exploration, extraction, production and refining of crude oil. Midstream operations involve the processing, storing, and transporting petroleum products such as crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids (ethane, propane and butane) and sulfur. Downstream operations are those operations that use petroleum products as feedstock, such as petrochemical processing plants that produce gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil and other petroleum byproducts.
